Can I Have Solar Panels in the UK?

What You Need to Know About Solar Suitability, Planning and Installation

With energy bills rising and thousands of homes and businesses turning to renewable power, one of the most common questions we hear is, “Can I actually have solar panels on my property in the UK?”

The short answer for most people is yes — but there are a few things worth understanding before you get started.

Is the UK Sunny Enough for Solar?

Many people assume Britain is simply too cloudy for solar to be effective, but this couldn’t be further from the truth. Solar PV panels don’t rely on hot sunshine — they work using daylight, which means they continue generating electricity even on overcast days.

Modern solar systems are designed to operate efficiently in varying light conditions. A well-installed system in North Wales or anywhere in the UK can produce thousands of kilowatt-hours of power each year, significantly reducing your reliance on the grid. So while our weather might not rival Spain’s, we still have more than enough light to make solar a smart investment.

Can My Roof Support Solar Panels?

Most homes and commercial buildings are suitable for solar panels, but roof characteristics do make a difference.
South-facing roofs tend to generate the most energy, but east- and west-facing roofs also perform well and often compensate throughout the day. The pitch of your roof also matters slightly, although installers can adjust mounting angles if needed.

Shading is one of the biggest factors to consider. Trees, chimneys, or neighbouring buildings that block sunlight for long periods can reduce output, which is something our survey team always checks during a site assessment.

If your roof isn’t suitable, that isn’t the end of the conversation. Ground-mounted systems are a popular option for rural properties, farms and businesses with available land.

Do I Need Planning Permission?

In most cases, you don’t. Solar panels fall under permitted development, meaning homeowners are normally free to install them without planning approval.

There are a few exceptions. Planning permission may apply if you live in a listed building, a conservation area, or if you are installing very large arrays on flat roofs or commercial sites. For businesses, the planning process can be more formal depending on size, location and visibility.

The good news is that your installer can help determine whether approval is needed and guide you through the steps if it is.

Can I Afford It? What About Grants or Finance?

Cost is a major consideration, but solar is now more accessible than ever.
Homeowners benefit from lower electricity bills and can earn money from the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) by selling unused energy back to the grid. Businesses have even more flexibility, with options like CAPEX ownership or OPEX/lease-style funding, meaning you don’t always need to pay upfront to go solar.

Here in North Wales, eligible businesses may also be able to access support programmes such as the North Wales Clean Energy Fund, and McGuinness Renewables helps guide organisations through grant and application processes.

Is My Property Eligible?

Solar panels can be installed on a wide range of property types — detached, semi-detached, terraced homes, bungalows, warehouses, offices, holiday parks and more. The main requirements are suitable roof space, safe access, and structural integrity.

If you rent your home or business premises, you will need permission from the owner. For organisations leasing industrial units, OPEX or power purchase models can make solar viable without owning the building.

Even if you plan to expand later, you can start with a modest system and upgrade with battery storage in future — a common approach for properties aiming for long-term energy independence.

How Do I Find Out If My Property Qualifies?

The simplest way to know whether solar will work for you is to book a survey. An installer will assess your roof space, shade levels, structural suitability and expected savings, then recommend a system based on your usage.

At McGuinness Renewables, we offer free consultations and tailored designs for homes and businesses across North Wales and the wider UK. We make the process straightforward from start to finish, including funding, installation and aftercare.

Ready to Find Out If Solar Will Work for You?
Most UK properties are suitable for solar panels — and with the right guidance, switching to clean, renewable power is easier than ever. Whether you’re looking to lower your household bills or future-proof your business, you may be just one survey away from making it happen.
